The Captain is the only artist that I've been able to consistently like through many years of constantly changing tastes (such changes have slowed down now, though) because, frankly, he's that good. Of course, he might have just been insane, or maybe his Magic Band couldn't play music very well, but they must have pulled a Shaggs because for whatever reason, it worked. To a lot of people, though, the Captain probably seems like some sort of heinous figure in the world of music, what with his raspy voices and his convoluted style of blues that just doesn't sound right. But hey, I guess that was the idea behind his... ideas(?).
Controversial opinions:
Trout Mask Replica is shit.
Shiny Beast > All
Strictly Personal > Safe As Milk
Cpt Beefheart > Frank Zappa

I love Captain Beefheart, though I think Trout Mask Replica is awesome.
Listening wise, I like Beefheart more, but Frank Zappa was a better musician IMO.

I listen to him a lot and appreciate his work, but I'm not as big a fan of him as similar artists.

I hadn't heard of him at that time and Gary said something about MTV reporting on his death. With MTV involved I figured, "this must be some popstar!" But I was wrong. Good times.

I do dig Safe as Milk, Trout Fish Mask Replica, and Lick My Decals Off Baby, but I prefer Zappa.
