Most people aren't going to get Lulu sadly. Art can fly over peoples' heads. Think about where it's coming from. It's based on German plays with a very dark central theme to them. Lou plays the part of Lulu, a tortured and abused dancer. Although the lyrics may sound weird to some people, there most definitely is a deeper meaning to them.
There was a thread on RB.com where I think the user Backbeat60-62 explained it best.
Sometimes I think people don't even realize the deeper meaning that is in some art and will completely detest it. Of course not everyone is going to like it, but I just think some people are being unfair.

Ihave a feeling this is art. If you don't have the brain capacity or time to figure out the background of what's going on with "Lulu", and don't want to know, you may never understand this musical concept! Nonetheless, with this, you are invited to. The fun part is, Metallica doesn't have to do what their fans expect and they'll still be fine. They earned freedom to expand. Also, has Lou Reed's music ever gotten a good review? I hope people judge this by the "concept album" standard, of Metallica stepping outside their comfort zone and being something else for a while. Rather than by judging this on Metallica's past achievements and albums. It could have been just another collection of metal cover songs. This is an album about some challenging and painful subjects to talk about, so the music itself is fitting to the subject. People on one level will think it is all around bad, but on another level it makes much sense. Maybe those people will come around, maybe not. Such is art. As Lars said, with Metallica, lyrics had always been an afterthought. Now, they started with deep, rich lyrics and built up the riffs around it. In this way of changing the band dynamics, it's fun. It's mixing art forms. It's deeper and more mature than "this sucks" or "this is metal".
As with art, some people will completely miss the point, and it's just not going to be for those people. It is up to the individual. Will they sense the dimensions? This might be the most rock and roll album they've been a part of. How enjoyable can this subject matter be when put in a room with a lot more light shining down on it so that it comes through clear? Pain is pain and things in real life are uncomfortable. This album is about uncomfortable things, with a master of deep dark uncomfortable, so it will feel uncomfortable. Metal heads, welcome to the rock world, where you will be challenged. Feel the pain; talk about how uncomfortable it is. It is as real as the cold blooded stare of a serial killer.
I just know that this isn't an album for regular metal heads because this is way beyond its boundaries. Look at what critics and people are saying. So lighten up! I'm not in any way hateful or contemptuous, and what I said wasn't meant to be derogatory - but if you go read articles reviewing this album it seems the majority of people reviewing it seem incapable of understanding. Maybe it does make me think the worst. But hey if anyone who considers themselves a metal head is willing to go in to this album and make something out of it, that's great. The only problem is everyone is going to make sure you know it is a departure from what they normally do, over everything else, because I think most typical metal heads didn't know the "master of doom" known as Lou Reed until recently.
Lou Reed said that some Metallica fans are "threatening to shoot me, and that’s only because I showed up. They haven’t even heard the record yet, and they’re recommending various forms of torture and death.”
If there's any snide contempt, it's definitely for that group of 'fans'. Anyway, as big as this seems for the moment, welcome to Metallica's cult album. They have just went through an other worldly experience!
