So lately I've been thinking of talking about this and in my experience half the people I ran into said Nirvana was the best band of the 90s and about a quarter said Nirvana was the worst and the rest said nothing about them (at least in my experience). So, I've been thinking this over and such and I've came to this: So to me Nirvana isn't the best or worst band, they are just there, how so you may ask. Well it's like this, back in 1991 when Nevermind came out their most known song was Smells like teen spirit, that song right there used a slow then fast method,basically what The pixies used in their music, so you can say in a way that Nirvana borrowed that method. Yet, everyone was shitting bricks of joy over that song. To my logic the reason why they got so popular was because of that one song and Kurt's death. Now that's what I think, but I don't think they are the best just for one song, they have more enjoyable songs (but either way some of them are meh to me). Now for them being the worst, so from what I've ran into I've seen some claim that Nirvana are plagiarists ripoffs and such (it's different for everyone else take that into consideration) mainly for ripping off the riff to the song Eighties by Killing joke and not only that but saying how Kurt was an awful guitarist and how he couldn't sing (the singing part is a matter of opinion while the guitar part is fact because he himself said he couldn't play guitar) but to be honest, Kurt wasn't a bad singer, but he wasn't a good singer. For sure he couldn't play guitar. So after all that I've thought I've came to final thought: That Nirvana is not the worst or best band, they are just simply there and there is much better and much worse. What is your opinion on this band? |

Nirvana was a great band, and Nevermind is an important album that changed music history forever, and it's certainly an album that I personally enjoy a lot. Does that mean that Nirvana is the best band ever, or even in the 90's? Fuck no. There are tons of bands and artists I can name that released better albums in the 90's than Nirvana did. They do deserve a good portion of their praise, but I'd also agree that they are certainly overrated to some degree.

Nirvana's best album came out in the 80s. And Nirvana was very popular before Cobain's death. I still think Grunge is the best thing Alternative Rock music ever produced. Nirvana's Bleach is one of the finest examples of that.

However, Bleach is five star classic IMO.

I hate claims like that as well and I will agree with you there, despite me not liking Nirvana much I will say that Bleach was pretty good (I have that album too). |

EXCEPT If it weren't for Nirvana, there probably wouldn't be Foo Fighters, so that adds more importance(to me) |

Even though they're in my top 30 favorite bands, I can say that there are tons better. Melvins, CAKE, Beck, Primus, Green Day and many others.
