I just learned about 10 minutes ago one of my friends cuts herself. I've been talking to her and trying to convince her to stop but she is ignoring me and thinks her life is truly really unimpotant.

Well they do it to release endorphins. A release of endorphins makes you feel good. It's your body's natural pain killer. It's why some people hang from hooks because it's pleasurable. Seems stupid to me, but yeah... that's why people do it.
