But I know SMAP likes Merzbow, and I'm curious to see how many of his 1000 albums he's listened to.

The Hound Chronicles: 6/10 Hot Garden Stomp: 7/10 Zopilote Machine: 8/10 Hail and Farewell, Gothenburg: 7/10 Nine Black Poppies: 8/10 Sweden: 9/10 Beautiful Rat Sunset: 7/10 Nothing for Juice: 7/10 Full Force Galesburg: 9/10 Protein Source of the Future...Now!: 7/10 The Coroner's Gambit: 6/10 All Hail West Texas: 10/10 Bitter Melon Farm: 7/10 Ghana: 8/10 Tallahassee: 10/10 We Shall All Be Healed: 9/10 Come, Come to the Sunset Tree: 7/10 The Sunset Tree: 10/10 Babylon Springs: 7/10 Get Lonely: 9/10 Heretic Pride: 9/10 Satanic Messiah: 8/10 The Life of the World to Come: 10/10 The Life of the World in Flux: 7/10 All Eternals Deck: 8/10 All Survivors Pack: 7/10 Black Pear Tree (With Kaki King): 8/10 Moon Colony Bloodbath (With John Vanderslice): 9/10 I am a huge tMG fan obviously. Enough to track down those trillions of lo-fi recordings from the 90's. My favorite band, nuff said. I have yet to have them disappoint me and this year's new album looks like it won't! Yay I love you John Darnielle. Your sound is so familar and welcoming yet mysterious and exciting, can't find anything better.

I don't have time to do a Merzbow one at the moment, but I really want to comment that I haven't met a single Merzbow basher who was a fan of noise and/or could name three other noise musicians.
It's unfair to call it garbage, regardless of whether or not you care for it.

Not even the tip of the iceberg for Merzbow for sure, but there's definitely the highlights of his career hidden amongst there. I definitely prefer his harsher sound to the half hearted experiments he has started to do over the last decade or so. He has done a few worthwhile collaborations with other artists I guess in that time period, but Merzbow by himself is in a creative slump.

BONUS RATING SINCE TOKI MENTIONED THEM Garbage: 6/10 Version 2.0: 6/10 Beautifulgarbage: 5/10 Bleed Like Me: 5/10 They suprisingly had some depth to them, the singles would make you think otherwise. Still, fun kinda brainless music, but they dropped off in the 2000's, although their reunion album is supposedly really good?

Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention Freak Out!: 9/10 Absolutely Free: 8/10 We're Only in It for the Money: 8/10 Lumpy Gravy: 7/10 Cruising With Ruben & The Jets: 6/10 Uncle Meat: 7/10 Hot Rats: 8/10 Weasels Ripped My Flesh: 8/10 The Grand Wazoo: 5/10 Over-Nite Sensation: 7/10 Apostrophe ('): 9/10 One Size Fits All: 6/10 Sheik Yerbouti: 7/10 Honestly need to grab a few later albums from him, but yeah I love Zappa. Wacky, yet totally focused and overall damn good and creative music.

I don't care if they're everyone's first sludge band, they're still easily among the best. I'm in a minority in finding their very early stuff best though.

Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention Melvins Captain Beefheart Safe as Milk: 6/10 Trout Mask Replica: 6/10 Lick My Decals Off, Baby: 6/10 As much as I respect the man and what he's done for music I find him merely alright. I just can't get into him like other people, Trout Mask Replica used to be like 7 before a recent relisten I had.

I've heard a few cuts from both of them, still just good. The title track off of Ice Cream for Crow is possibly the best thing he's done though from what I've heard.
