Zilla2112's Music Club Reviews: Week 1
"This Modern Glitch" by The Wombats
With a focus on poppy melodies, use of keyboards, and basic song structures, "This Modern Glitch" is a listenable indie pop record that does little to advance the genre. In theory, there's nothing bad about this album: the production is top notch, the vocals are well sung (and very British), and each song has a pleasant mood and danceable rhythms. However, this album takes practically no risks and has very little variation. I couldn't remember a single song from this album, and I wouldn't want to revisit any because nothing stood out.
While this album is above most generic Top-40 pop, it's not by much of a margin. Having a few of these pop anthems isn't a bad thing, but when every song focuses on similar melodies/harmonies, song structures, keyboard sounds, guitar lines, and drum patterns, it becomes monotonous. "This Modern Glitch" could benefit from some sort of musical experimentation and deviation from the safe and commercially acceptable songwriting the album is filled with. The lyrics are nothing outstanding either, but they don't detract from the songs in any way.

I've listened to the album twice and I'll probably have my review up tomorrow. Also, since I am often away for periods of longer than a week, would it be acceptable to review some albums early and send them to you in a PM?

Week 1: "This Modern Glitch" by The Wombats
8/10
Setting aside the lack of variation and the fact that all of the songs are very similar, I would say this is a pretty good album. Upon first listen, it didn't seem like anything special. However, after another listen I started to realize how much I liked it. I don't particularly like pop-based albums as much, but this was a real gem. The melodies are quite catchy (of course that doesn't automatically make an album good, but they cut deeper for me) and the rhythms are enjoyable. The lyrics aren't too bad either. The highlights of this album in my opinion are Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves), Last Night I Dreamt... and especially Jump Into The Fog.
Sorry if this is really crappy and/or too short. I haven't done many reviews..

Week 1: Civplayah "This Modern Glitch"- The Wombats
Strong pop album--energetic, and I really dug the orchestral touches (The beginning of Anti-D comes to mind.) Oh and also it's MAD British, haha. For all its strengths, though, it's formulaic, and in the end that's what took the most away.. If I listen to an album for the first or second time and I can't remember anything after the first four or so songs I'd say it's not a very good one. The lyrics were sort of hit-and-miss for me; sometimes I'd really enjoy the musical parts to a song but the lyrics were sorta just ehh (Cheese? Sliding off... a cracker...?), or it would be the other way around. In short, it's something I enjoyed, but I probably wouldn't spin it again if given the option of other albums.

Week 1: Civplayah: "This Modern Glitch"- The Wombats[/u]
Not really my cup of tea. As much as I'm not exactly into this genre, I gave the album a listen, and to me, nothing really stood out. It's monotonous and no track stood out to me. Each song sounds like it's trying to hard to be the next hit single by "Fun" However, I did enjoy the bass in a couple of the songs, and the obvious British accent was a plus. Overall, I don't think I'll find myself listening to this album again.

Zilla2112's Music Club Reviews: Week 2
"Smalhans" by Lindstrøm
Disco was huge back in the 70's and 80's, but it was a genre that was very lacking overall. On "Smalhans", Lindstrøm brings the listener back to that era, but with a more modern twist. The grooves are there, dominating the music, but synthesizers have taken over the role of traditional instruments. The synths sound very 80's, which is usually not a good thing for me. However, the effects and textures placed here give this album a unique sound.
There is certainly a lot of repetition throughout the album, causing most of it to blend together. Thankfully, this album isn't very long, consisting of only 6 tracks with a run time of just over 30 minutes. There are a few interesting sections here and there worthy of attention, but most of it goes along at the same tempo, based around similar synth sounds. The album is entirely instrumental, so there are no lyrics to critique. However, because this synthetic collection of songs lacks vocal melodies and lyrics, it becomes difficult to connect with them and think of them as anything more than nice little dance tunes (the fact the songs are named after Norwegian food doesn't help). "Lindstrøm" may make for excellent music at Gay Tony's club in Liberty City, but there isn't enough variety or emotion to make this an album that I would revisit anytime soon.
