Rapping by itself is not music (as it has no melody, it is just speaking poetry); however, the rap genre is music since there is music/melody backing it up.
Anyways I'll add a handful of artists in that I feel deserve to be in.
ELO Steely Dan Jethro Tull The Monkees Sum 41 Rise Against Paul McCartney George Harrison The Beach Boys Billie Holiday Mastodon 3 Doors Down Tenacious D Muse The Pillows The Grateful Dead Coldplay Otis Redding Sly & The Family Stone Def Leppard Jerry Lee Lewis
If you feel that there are any more artists that should be entered. Please, feel free to say some more.

That is 179 artists. Now, we will go one placement at a time. Everyone can say up to 2 artists that they feelcan make the position. We will discuss it and figure out who goes where, starting with 1 all the way down to 100.
I nominate The Beatles for spot 1. (Obviously) Who agrees/disagrees and why?

Also, last one, I swear. Tom Waits. I'll get rid of anything just to get him up here.
Anyway, for number one I'm going out on one I'm sure won't win, but IMO, should be number one. John Cage, for twisting the definition of music with nearly everything he made, and constantly being innovative.

Beatles should obviously be number one. As they are the highest selling, and most influencial artist of all time.

Not necessarily..... Don't get me wrong, I love The Beatles, but sales shouldn't really even matter, and the most influential artist of all time is really whatever started music to begin with.
What really should matter is creativity and innovation, influence (as you said), and effort. The Beatles win 2.5/3 in that for me.

I'd rather make Queen number one. As their creativity and innovation was amazing.

Creativity: The Beatles have been extremely creative in almost every piece they made. Song themes, album covers, lyrics. All creativity at it's finest. Innovation: The Beatles were the first rock group to do a lot of things. A list I don't feel like finding atm. Also, Harrison created many riffs that were, genius. Day Tripper for example. Influence: The Beatles probably influenced most of the artists even today. As soon as they hit it big, it changed music forever. Effort: The Beatles have done a lot to get where they are now. They had to go through a lot to get to the top.
Also, who else could make no. 1?

Also, Lennon & McCartney are the best songwriters of all time. George Harrison is up there as well.
