I've been playing percussion at school since 4th grade, but I only started playing drum set (and actually applied myself) about 8 years ago. I used to be in a band ( here's our old myspace page). Die Jr. has sequenced drums, but I played drums on the other songs. We've covered: Shine by Collective Soul Milquetoast by Helmet Territorial Pissings by Nirvana Paranoid by Black Sabbath Too Many Puppies by Primus Them Bones by Alice in Chains Touch Peel and Stand by Days of the New And probably others I'm forgetting. I don't typically play along to my mp3 player, but I typically play to Blue Oyster Cult or Genesis when I do. I also played marching percussion for 7 years (most of it snare drum). Drum line is a great way to learn technique, and build up your chops. To be honest, I'm kind of a mediocre drummer (part of the reason our band split up), but I enjoy playing. I am taking a percussion techniques class and am hoping to get into the drum line at school. Awesome! Is the percussion techniques class a high school class? If so, then I'm totally jealous (although, our school had a guitar workshop class, so I guess it's fair). Do you know what spot in the battery you're going for? idk what my kit is exactly. I am borrowing it from my uncle. Zildjian Ride, Crash and Hi-hat. Gretsch Snare and Kick Remo Hi, mid and lo tom. The tom shells are probably still Gretsch, your uncle just changed the heads . Oddly enough, I also have a Gretsch kit, with Remo heads on the high, low, and floor tom (never bothered to change the bass or snare heads). I've got 14" Sabian hats, 20" Sabian ride (I hate 18" rides), 16" Sabian crash, 14" A-Custom Zildjian fast crash, and a 10" Sabian splash. Toms are 10", 12", 14" I believe. Haha, so I'm guessing that most drummers here started with Rock Band? Yeah, I think it's just Kyle and me that didn't. To be fair too, Rock Band helped me with my playing. Mostly with limb independence; before I played Rock Band, my feet kinda sucked.

I want to get a drum kit. I've sat down at a drum kit a few times and it was really fun. If I do get one it'll probally be a cheap $300 one, but I'd still be fine with that.

Snare OR Toms Cymbal Bass TRIANGLE Here's one of their videos from an assembly last year. It sucked at first, and the quality of the video stinks but it was pretty epic. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Probably, lol.

Yes, it is a high school class. We also have guitar and piano. I've taken both. For spots I'd prefer..... Snare OR Toms Cymbal Bass TRIANGLE Drum set players tend to take to tenors pretty well. They're a lot of fun, but they're also the heaviest (barring the heaviest bass drums). I enjoyed snare, but I sometimes wish I stayed on bass instead. When you have a good bass line (and you're doing runs and stuff), bass drum can be a lot of fun. Ewww... snares playing match grip . It's a little hard to tell due to the quality of the video, but they seem pretty good. The basses are kinda dirty, but that's typical for high school. Here's our cadence from a few years ago. It's changed a bit since then, but I think they're still playing a variation of it.

GET WITH THE TIMES OLDIE! No, I'm just kidding. Match grip is way easier for set, but in drumline I play traditional.

Yeah, I play match for set too. It's just on marching snare, it looks and feels weird to play match.
A lot of high schools do play match though, especially if they're the type that go to a lot of competitions. Traditional grip is more difficult to get good with.

Yesterday, I realized that I had left my sticks in the car, and because I was too lazy to go get them, I just used the guitar hero sticks that hadn't even been taken out of their wrapper. Worst sticks I've ever played with. They were light, soft, splintered, and when i played with the shoulder, the stick actually broke right in half.
TL;DR: I finally broke a stick!

For the first time? Sheesh, I've only been playing for 1 and a half years and I can't remember how many sticks I've broken. And I play on an electric set! I remember breaking my first stick while playing Won't Get Fooled Again on Rock Band. It was before I started playing real drums.

But still, it's crazy that they wouldn't break during a period of five years. Maybe you just don't hit as hard or something, idk.

Like what, 5Zs? That's pretty insane that you haven't broken a stick in five years of playing until now.

I haven't /broken/any but my RB sticks are extremely beat down.
And I'm new to real drumming so my sticks are only a couple months old, won't be broken...... yet.
