Day 1
As I am finishing a Boston album, I realize that out of all the broader genres of music that exist, progressive rock is the one that I am least familiar with. I have no idea how or why I thought of this, but reflecting back on all the music I've heard, I've only been confined to what is essentially entry-level bands. We all have Pink Floyd and King Crimson and Genesis, but that's not enough for me. Prog is an enticing genre, one of wonder even. So why haven't I heard more of it? The answer to that, I do not know myself. So now I find myself at a crossroads: I can continue my neglect of the genre or I could pursue the genre, listening in-depth to it like I feel that I have done or tried to do with other genres. In fact, I decide that will most definitely look into prog and so, from this day, all I will listen to is prog until I am properly satisfied with it. That being said, I will document me "adventures" here.
--
To begin, I pick an album at random. It happens to be Asia's self-titled album, which apparently is the one prog album that sounds absolutely nothing like prog. As I put the album on, I realize that Asia does indeed not sound like the prog that I've heard before. Instead of twenty minutes of whale sounds that I've come to expect, I'm hearing music that doesn't sound quite unlike the Boston that I just listened to, and just like Boston, the album cover was very misleading. Instead of the dragons with telekinesis that I expected, I instead get John Wetton telling me that it is the heat of the moment. Well how lovely John, but what about the dragons? As for first impressions it does itself good since the music is beyond enjoyable, but the synthy sound doesn't exaclty put me in the prog mindset. How disappointing.
